Born Milton Newbury in Houston, Texas in 1942- Mickey Newbury was a country singer-songwriter, guitarist. This was hit only Pop Top 40 hit. The most famous version of this song- was done by Elvis Presley.
Elvis made it his own along with all the theatrics and karate moves. Newberry, like Jimmy Webb was a prolific songwriter, but this trilogy seems to be his only big hit. Nice legacy. Today, this song will offend virtually everyone on the planet, especially our Einstein’s under 30.
Good point- you are correct- if a performer did this in concert today- imagine the uproar- headline news… protests- a career in crisis. apologies not accepted… it would be a mess.
Nice piece but yeah–nowadays comes across as more of a “Confederate Trilogy”
