2021 Song Draft- Round 5 Pick 3- Badfinger20 selects- ‘Sleep Walk’- Santo and Johnny.
I have always liked and admired good instrumentals. I look at them the same way I look at the great silent movies of the early 20th century. They have to get what they want to say across without dialog. That is not easy to do but when they succeed…they are great. When I hear Sleep Walk it’s like hearing a dream set to music…haunting and beautiful at the same time.
Lyrics would not do this song justice…it says all it needs to say.
I first heard it on the movie La Bamba and I never grew tired of it. Unlike other soundtrack songs…I don’t think of the movie when I listen to this one. Sleep Walk is on its own little island.
I like many instrumentals but this one is probably my favorite. It sets a mood like no other. It was written and performed by Santo and Johnny Farina in 1959. It peaked at #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #22 in the UK Charts.
Great song. Love the comparison with silent movies – so true!!
I get lost in this song. Awesome choice.
Thanks Keith… this one never gets old
Excellent tune! Didn’t recognize the name, but knew the music right away. Seems like it was made for a great movie scene… though it would fit in well with a late night listening list . Terrific guitar work.
I didn’t recognize the name, either. I always thought of it as Hawaiian music. LOL!
Regarding a movie scene, actually, the reverse is true:

OH I LOVE THIS!!!
Thanks for listening
Great instrumentals tell a story without words, and this is a great instrumental.
Oh wow, do you know how many years it’s been since hearing this. I loved it as a kid. Hearing it as an adult all I can think of are two people from the 50’s slow dancing. Beautiful choice, Max.
I always go back to it every few months to give it another listen. It sets a mood…thanks Lisa.
You’re welcome. Love that finish. So classy.
This song has been in SO MUCH:

Like I told Dave, I didn’t recognize the name but, recognize the song. It’s awesome.
Thanks Vic…I like this one a lot. I didn’t realize it’s been used that much!
Those two are still a bit active:

Wow…I wonder how much they made off of that song with all of the sound tracks.
Hopefully, a lot.
Old website, which I found interesting:

That is….even the guitar tab.
And, they are in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame:

That makes sense…this song influenced a lot of people.
And, still is…
Great one! It has a totally sublime, atmospheric feel. This makes me think of my parents when they were teenagers…even though I wasn’t even around yet. And it’s another instrumental. If instrumentals were a band, they would be winning the draft.
The mood of it just takes you away. They don’t relate but when you posted Apache I thought of this one.
That’s cool! I get it. Another one that doesn’t relate but I was considering along with Apache, is Buckaroo. If this were a 20-song draft, I’d squeeze that one in somehow.
Oh yes…I love that song. That would be a great one.
A timeless instrumental classic. I’m so old that I remember hearing this song when it was a hit. Nice pick Max.
More instrumentals. Love it and this pick. Jeff Beck does a cover on the ‘Porky’s Revenge’ soundtrack. Never seen the film but the soundtrack is very good. Another instrumental on that record that I think you’d like. Good stuff Max.
Thanks CB…I never heard that before…I remember when the movie was out though.
I had no connection to the film just liked all the artists that were on the record. Some cool tracks.
I checked it out…you are right….some great artists…who would have known?
Im a huge Dave Edmunds fan. Dont get me going on him. He has some wicked Instrumentals akin to ‘Sleep Walk’ We have to get together and spin records one day.
That is a plan…
I don’t think I’ve ever heard this before – I obviously need to watch more movies! It seems hard to classify the genre – there’s a bit of country in there obviously, but some other stuff too.
I never thought about that…but yea…it is hard to classify.
Great pick, that steel guitar sounds mighty sweet!
Thanks Christian
A bit late to the party Max but love this – no words needed to convey the emotion – takes you away to some other timeless era that is soothing and contentment.
