GREAT BASEBALL NICKNAMES-‘ THE MAN’- STAN MUSIAL

St. Louis Cardinals: Stan Musial's time in the Navy

Great Baseball Nicknames-‘ The Man’- Stan Musial. How great a ballplayer was Stan ‘The Man’ Musial? Ken Griffey Jr. was born on November 21 in the small western Pennsylvania town of Donora. Ken Griffey Jr. isn’t even the greatest outfielder born on a November 21st- in Donora. Stan Musial was also born on that date in Donora. If Stan Musial had been anything but one of the all-time greats- maybe the nickname ‘The Man’ wouldn’t really fit but Stan Musial is one of the 20 greatest players in baseball history. Musial, who spent his entire career as a St. Louis Cardinal- won 6 NL Battling Titles and collected 3630 hits, 1949 RBI’s and 475 home runs in his career and had the reputation of being as great of a man as he was a ballplayer. How did he get his nickname? Musial always hit well at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field- in 1946 when he came to bat one time Brooklyn fans exclaimed ‘Here comes that man again’- sportswriters picked up on this and the nickname stuck.
