Cover Me- Other Artists Covering Beatles Songs: “P.S. I Love You”- The Smithereens. From the first time I heard The Smithereens debut album it was clear that they were heavily influenced by the music of The Beatles. Later in their careers they would release two albums of Beatles covers- Meet The Smithereens!- which is an album covering The Beatles American release Meet The Beatles and B-Sides The Beatles. I find it interesting that The Smithereens covered The Beatles early period not the middle or late period which gets more attention.

The Smithereens came out of New Jersey – I would add they were 100 time better than another Jersey band from that era Bon Jovi. It’s a shame how it works- the far inferior band sells millions and millions- and The Smithereens- while certainly successful were more of a moderate success. Their debut came out in 1986- Especially For You- and I took an immediate liking to their music. I would highly recommend their first five albums. Anyway- in addition to later making two Beatles covers albums they also did an album covering The Who’s Tommy.

  1. They were a great band. I saw one video clip of them doing “Don’t Bother Me” which was great…the guitar player was singing it .

    I do like this version.

  2. I don’t know “100X” but I absolutely concur better than Bon Jovi. My ears perked up back when I first heard ‘Blood & Roses’ (happily a radio hit in Toronto at the time) and really loved the Green Thoughts album… I’d say one of my five most played discs for a couple of years after it came out. I got the next couple of albums they put out too and they were largely very good. Never had any of their cover albums but what I’ve heard of them, they did them justice. Sadly under-rated group
