Deep Cuts From 1971: “Under My Wheels”- Alice Cooper. While I have pointed out in the past some of my sisters dubious singles from back in the 1970’s “Seasons In The Sun” and ” You Light Up My Life” being the best/ worst examples- she did get an album or two that I regularly borrowed that weren’t part of my collection- one of them was Alice Cooper’s Greatest Hits. Of course I was familiar with songs like “Schools Out” and “I’m Eighteen” there were a few songs on that album that I hadn’t yet heard- and one of my favorites was “Under My Wheels” from the 1971 album Killer. At this point in time Alice Cooper was the name of the band. The singer Vincent Furnier was aka Alice Cooper but until 1974 it was a band. Anyway. I am surprised to learn that over the years “Under My Wheels” has been the third most performed song by Alice in concerts after “School’s Out” and ‘I’m Eighteen.”
“Under My Wheels” was released as the first single off of Killer [the bands fourth album} but it fell short of being a Top 40 hit- peaking at #59. That Alice Cooper’s Greatest Hits collection that my sister bought [well it would later become mine in a trade- I can’t recall what I gave up but it wasn’t much- but not as great of a steal as when I traded a slice of pizza for Elvis Costello’s My Aim Is True- with my brother} was and remains a fun listen. “Under My Wheels” one of my favorite tracks on that Greatest Hits album. It’s the only Alice Cooper album I own.
