All Together Now: Ranking All The Beatles Songs:So far #204″ “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”, #203:” Mr. Moonlight”, 202:”Wild Honey Pie”, 201: “Chains”, 200:”Why Don’t We Do It In The Road? 199: “Honey Don’t.” 198: “A Taste Of Honey”, #197: “Matchbox”- #196: “Devil In Her Heart” # 195: “Little Child”, #194: “Anna”, #193: “Dig It.”

#194: “Anna”- from Please Please Me. Covers that The Beatles did of others songs on the first two albums feature prominently in this countdown so far. That doesn’t mean that there will be no high ranking covers because there will be. The original by Arthur Alexander blows The Beatles cover from Please Please Me out of the water. Maybe there was a reason for John Lennon’s subpar vocal on this song- THE Beatles expert Mark Lewisohn reports in his The Beatles Recording Sessions that John had a bad cold on the day of the recording. I tend to agree with critic Ian MacDonald who writes in Revolution In The Head- that Lennon sounds like ‘a passionate youth grappling with a man’s song.”

#193: “Dig It”- from Let It Be. When I first heard this ‘song”- it is only .51 seconds long- on side 2 of Let It Be- I wondered who is Matt Busby? Who is Georgie Wood? Back then it wasn’t as easy to find these things out as it is today. Later I would learn that Matt Busby was a highly successful manager of Manchester United from 1945-69. Georgie Wood- was a 4’9″ actor, comedian and music hall performer. The ‘song’ was cut down from a 15 minute jam. 4 minutes and a half minutes of this jam appears in the Let It Be documentary.
Getting a little harsh on the boys with Anna, Hans! That second song I do not remember and I have the Let it Be Naked album. Was it edited out of the naked album?
Indeed it was!
