The Originals: Songs The Beatles Covered:” Please Mr. Postman”- The Marvelettes. The Marvelettes first single in 1961- “Please Mr. Postman” has the distinction of being the first Motown single to go all the way to #1. The song written by Georgia Dobbins, William Garrett, Freddie Gorman, Brian Holland and Robert Bateman would go to #1 again in 1975 with The Carpenters- in a rather lame version of the song. The Beatles a big fan of the American girl groups- covered it on their second album- released on November 22, 1963.
I always liked this song. I like the BBC version of it the best by them.
I like this song, as well as the Beatles’ cover. I loved most of the Carpenters’ songs, but I agree with you that their cover is pretty lame. I was shocked it went to #1, when other of their more worthy songs like “For All We Know” and “Superstar” did not.
I remember those times before email and “social media.”
Love this song. It’s one of the best in The Birth of The Beatles
