The Temptations took “I Can’t Get Next To You” to #1 on the Pop Singles chart in 1969- a year later Al Green covered it on his Al Green Gets Next To You album- and as a single it went to #11 in the R&B singles chart and #60 on the Pop chart. Al Green was born in Forrest City, Arkansas. A soul singer-songwriter he had started out in gospel music- and returned to gospel in 1980- but in the 70’s was very successful on the pop charts. All told he had 20 Hot 100 singles with 14 making the Top 40. His biggest hit “Let’s Stay Together” went to #1 in 1971.
