Ike and Tina Turner were a husband-wife duo who had 20 Hot 100 singles with 6 Top 40 hits before they disbanded in 1974. Their biggest hit was the cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary” #4 in 1971. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. Tina went on to a very successful solo career starting with her comeback in the mid 80’s. Their cover of Sly Stone’s “I Want To Take You Higher” entered the charts the same week as Sly And The Family Stones original and did better on the charts #34 to Sly and The Family Stones #38. Odd- I’ve heard the Sly Stone version countless times but don’t think I have ever heard the Ike and Tina Turner version until now.

  1. Hey Hans – CB sent me to your blog – I’m loving that you picked 1970 to focus on. That was the year I got truly addicted to the radio – 77 WABC in New York. Is it really 50 years ago??? Btw, Sly released this tune twice. In 1969, it only reached #60… Time to go looking around in here.
    Thanks

    • Welcome. 1970 a pretty interesting year. Next year 1971 I think even better music wise. 50 years ago-that is hard to believe.
