- The Beatles released on this day a collection of non-album singles and b-sides- titled Hey Jude. Ten songs were released on the compilation album headlined by The Beatles huge single “Hey Jude” which up to this point hadn’t been released except as a single. Songs on the album went as far back as the A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack with “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “I Should Have Known Better.” This album was basically to get product out there as the Let It Be project had been delayed. The album cover photo was taken at John Lennon’s house and was taken during the final ever Beatles photo session. In 2007 Neil Aspinall The Beatles right hand man would claim that the back photo was to be the front- but the Beatles manager at the time Allen B. Klein reversed them in error.
- National Public Radio was incorporated to be a provider of commercial free news and programming to American public radio stations. NPR would go on the air for the first time on April 20, 1971.
