MY MUSIC LISTENING JOURNAL: DAY 449: SUNDAY MAY 13, 2019

ALBUMS

Taming the Tiger

  • JONI MITCHELL: TAMING THE TIGER: 1998: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: An interesting but generally ignored album from late in her recording her career. Fits in with her mid 70’s jazz inspired recordings. Favorites- Harlem In Havana, Lead Balloon, Stay In Touch. An under appreciated album.

  • THE DECEMBERISTS: HER MAJESTY THE DECEMBERISTS: 2003:4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The second album is a fine follow up to the debut-they still weren’t on the charts but were establishing themselves for a break out down the road. The highlight is the opening cut Shanty For The Arethusa. All the songs written and sung by Colin Meloy whose vocal talent really stands out. This isn’t your typical rock-pop band.

  • BEE GEES: ODESSA: 1969: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The Bee Gee’s before the disco- it was their 6th album and a double album. This was their last album before they broke up- they would of course would reform. I have always liked the pre-disco Bee Gee hits- this is the first full album of Bee Gee’s from that era that I have heard- included in the book 1001 Albums You Should Hear list.

  • THE BEATLES: PLEASE PLEASE ME: 1963: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Beginning my May Beatles discography listening party!

  • THE BEATLES: WITH THE BEATLES: 1963: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS:

Mutantes1969.jpg

  • OS MUTANTES: MUTANTES: 1969: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: A Brazilian psychedelic -tropicalia album- I may not understand the language but the music makes it an enjoyable listen. I had fallen behind in my 1969 album listening- this was their second album- their first in 1968 was also a fun listen.

Courtney Barnett Sometimes I Think.jpg

  • COURTNEY BARNETT: SOMETIMES I SIT AND THINK AND SOMETIMES I JUST SIT: 2015: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: An outstanding debut from Barnett an Australian who drew comparisons to Dylan- with her strong lyrics and delivery. One of my favorite albums in recent years. Someone to watch in the future- her second solo album came out last year and is another strong one.

  • COURTNEY BARNETT AND KURT VILE: LOTTA SEA LICE:2017: 3 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: After Barnett’s debut this seems like a subdued affair. I am not that familiar with Vile other than having heard the name. Only three Barnett written songs here- it’s not a bad album but at this point in her career I would rather have had another solo album.
