Songs I like- by Artists I Don’t– ‘We’re An American Band”- Grand Funk Railroad. Grand Funk Railroad was incredibly popular in the early 70s- and after a half decade of great popularity they seemed to fade away quickly. Mark, Don, Mel.   I have tried hard to like them over the years but it has been a lost cause- not a fan- but I do love their #1 single from 1973- “We’re An American Band”- written and sung  by band member Don Brewer and produced by Todd Rundgren. The song is autobiographical- written about the experiences of touring- and it mentions playing poker with blues great Freddie King, partying with four groupies who snuck into their hotel in Nebraska and a famous groupie named Connie. As a teenager living in a small town this song made being a rock star sound like a pretty good gig. Sign me up! We’re An American Band was the first of two #1 hits for them- the other being a remake of The Loco-Motion. From 1970-1975 these guys had 9 Top 40 hits and 7 Top 10 albums.
