MY MUSIC LISTENING JOURNAL: DAY 387: MONDAY MARCH 11, 2019

ALBUMS

Ramones - Halfway to Sanity cover.jpg

  • THE RAMONES: HALFWAY TO SANITY: 1987: 2 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: I have a number of artist discographies going on- and today I decided to finish out The Ramones. The ending wasn’t great. Although even the worst Ramones album has something worth hearing- their final albums were shaky. This album has a number of different styles present- the best songs here- Bop ‘Til You Drop, Bye Bye Baby and Go Lil’ Camaro Go”

Ramones - Brain Drain cover.jpg

  • THE RAMONES: BRAIN DRAIN: 1989: 2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The Ramones final release on Sire Records. Although it wasn’t a ‘hit’- the song Pet Cemetery would be one of the most played Ramones songs on the radio-it was written for the Stephen  King movie of the same name. By this time the band members were all having problems and it was showing.

Ramones - Mondo Bizarro cover.jpg

  • THE RAMONES: MONDO BIZARRO: 1992: 3 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: A new album after three years between albums and signing with a new record label. An improvement on Brain Drain and at least partial return to form. One of the charms of The Ramones is their humor and on this album it returns.

Heathen (David Bowie album - cover art).jpg

  • DAVID BOWIE: HEATHEN: 2002: 4 1/2 Seen as Bowie’s reaction to 9/11. An overlooked classic. Favorite songs- Everyone Says ‘Hi”, Sunday, Slip Away, 5:15 The Angels Have Gone and Heathen. A very mature album. His best album since Scary Monsters in 1980.

Ramones - Acid Eaters cover.jpg

  • THE RAMONES: ACID EATERS: 1993: 3 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The Ramones were always throwing a cover or two on an album but this was their only album of all covers- from The Who to The Stones to The Animals and Dylan- a fun listen.

Ramones - Adios Amigos cover.jpg

  • THE RAMONES: ADIOS AMIGOS: 1995: 3 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The final album accompanied by the final farewell tour. Saw them on this tour as the buzz sawed their way through their songs. Best song on this album I Don’t Wanna Grow Up which was written by Tom Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan. The Ramones deserved more success than they received commercially- they were pioneers. Sadly the original band is now all gone.

Raggedglory.jpg

  • NEIL YOUNG AND CRAZY HORSE: RAGGED GLORY: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Neil’s big comeback and return to relevance continues with this garage rock album-Country Home, White Line, Fuckin’ Up, Love To Burn among my favorites on here. Anyone who gave up on Neil in the mid 80’s were certainly back on board after Freedom and Ragged Glory.

David Bowie - Reality.jpg

  • DAVID BOWIE: REALITY: 2003: 3 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: No one knew it at the time but it would be the last Bowie album for nearly ten years-and for a while it looked like the final Bowie album- he suffered a heart attack and disappeared for awhile. New Killer Star, Pablo Picasso, She’ll Drive The Big Car and Never Get Old are favorites. Pretty good sounding album.

TomPetty&theHeartbreakersDamntheTorpedoes.jpg

  • TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS: DAMN THE TORPEDOES: 1979: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Their 3rd album and it while I like the first two albums this was a great leap forward- stands as one of their best albums- filled with great songs. It was their highest charting album #2- until the final studio album Hypnotic Eye went to #1 in 2014. Don’t Do Me Like That and Refugee were hits- my favorite songs on the album- Here Comes My Girl and Even The Losers. One of those ‘not a bad track on the album’ albums. I can’t believe this wasn’t on the 1001 albums to hear list.
