On this date – January 9, 1969 -50 years ago today- the Condon Committee which was chaired by physicist Edward Condon issued their report titled “Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects and their conclusion was ”  “nothing has come from the study of UFOs in the past 21 years that has added to scientific knowledge. Careful consideration of the record as it is available to us leads us to conclude that further extensive study of UFOs probably cannot be justified in the expectation that science will be advanced thereby.”

The Condon Report cost $520,000 and was commissioned by the United States Air Force. They also recommended that the Air Force close it’s Project Blue Book which had started in 1952 to study unidentified flying objects and UFO’s. The goal of Project Blue Book was to determine if UFO’s were a threat to national security and to scientifically analyze UFO data. Project Blue Book was terminated in December 1969.

I don’t know what they really came up with- if this was their actual conclusion or not but can you imagine if the report had said- yes there are UFO’s out there and they are visiting us? No- people would have freaked out- they couldn’t handle it. This was the only conclusion the committee could have came up with.

  1. Most UFO sightings can be explained. Birds, clouds, atmospheric peculiarities, soviet planes with identifiers switched off, electro-magnetic harmonies with deep earth movement. Nothing to be worried about.

    • I would have a hard time believing we are the only intelligent beings in the whole universe. If they are out there they seem to be leaving us along…

  2. When I was younger I was obsessed with UFOs and read a bunch of books re: them. Not really sure what the make of it as I agree that I think there is zero chance that there aren’t other intelligent life in universe and probably some that are more advanced being capable of visiting, so who knows. That said I think alot of sighting are natural phenomena or secret military planes being tested. I’m sure when the sleath fighters were being test flown many folks thought they were UFOs. Its also interesting to me how the concept of UFOs and aliens have entered popular culture -when I was young the idea of aliens was kind of out there – now I think most people don’t think twice about the concept – my kids kind of just accept that they are real. I think shows like the X Files helped popularize them.

    • I think you are correct on all your points. Maybe kids graduate from being fascinated with dinosaurs- to UFO’s. Like you I think most ‘sightings’ can be explained.
