It was fifty years ago today- Thursday January 9th, 1969. “We’re gonna win the game . I guarantee it.” Joe Namath the quarterback of the New York Jets said that three days before Super Bowl III at the Miami Touchdown Club, a banquet hall in Miami. No one gave the Jets much of a chance in the Super Bowl against the mighty Baltimore Colts who went 13-1 during the season and were being talked about some as one of the greatest teams ever. The Jets represented the AFL- and everyone knew at the time that the AFL was far inferior to the big establishment- the NFL. Atlanta Falcon coach Norm Van Brocklin said ‘This will be Namath’s first professional football game.” Namath was getting tired of the questions at this point and responding to a heckling fan he made his “Guarantee” The Jets going into the game were 18 point underdogs to the Colts. It was going to be a slaughter. No one told Joe Willie Namath and the Jets. With Joe’s ‘guarantee’ and the Jets huge upset in three days later- his place was secured in history. It was also one of the most important games in Pro Football history- it made the Super Bowl what it is today. In 1969 the so called experts thought it would be another ten years before the AFL caught up with the NFL. They were wrong. The Jets haven’t even been to a Super Bowl since.
Not a religious football watcher back then; however my stepdad, jock through and through, watched it whenever he could. As there was 1 TV, with a total of 3-4 channels, and he ruled the knob — not the remote — we watched football. I remember Joe Namath’s time in the sun. No idea he made football history in this way though. Wow.
That was the first Super Bowl I remember watching. I think every boy my age wanted to be Joe Namath back then.
I believe it. I’m sure my brothers did.
Hollywood Joe. Ever seen ‘C. C. & Company’?
I attended this Super Bowl in Miami . My ticket as I recall was purchased for around $15.00
WOW… and you saw history. Wasn’t exactly a great game but an historical one. Well worth $15 even in 1969 dollars.
