It was fifty years ago today- Saturday December 21, 1968 the NFL Playoffs began with the Dallas Cowboys traveling to Cleveland Stadium to take on the Cleveland Browns. The Cowboys in the previous two seasons had lost heartbreaking NFL Championship Games to the Green Bay Packers. The Cowboys got off to a 10-3 lead but the Browns tied it with a quick drive in the last minute of the half going 85 yards on 4 plays with quarterback Bill Nelsen connecting with Leroy Kelly on a 45 yard touchdown. On the first play of the second half the Browns broke it open when their linebacker David Lindsey intercepted a Don Meredith pass and went 27 yards for a touchdown. Three plays later the Cleveland defense rose again- when a Meredith pass bounced out of the hands of receiver Lance Rentzel and was picked off by Browns defensive back Ben Davis. With the ball at the Dallas 35- on the first play Cleveland’s star running back Leroy Kelly took a handoff all the way for a score and a 24-10 lead. The Cowboys could not recover from those three touchdowns in a short amount of time. Final score 31-20. The Browns advance to the NFL Championship Game next week against the winner of Sunday’s Minnesota at Baltimore game.
