The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is Down Home Girl. Down Home Girl was written by Jerry Leiber and Arthur Butler and appears as the second song on The Rolling Stones second UK album- The Rolling Stones No. 2. Jerry Leiber was of course at this point famous for the songwriting team he had formed with Mike Stoller in the 1950’s- Arthur Butler was one of the singers with The Impressions and a songwriter. The Rolling Stones were not the first to record the song- a few months earlier Alvin Robinson. The Stones came across this song when Keith Richards and manager Andrew Loog Oldham went to the Brill Building to see Jerry Lieber who wouldn’t see him- then someone recognized who they were and let them in. They were played a number of songs- liked this one and decided to record it. I had always thought this was a Rolling Stones original- probably because it sounds like one- it is that good- and also I had never heard any other version of the song. It was never released as a single but I think it would have been a hit had it been. A special guest appeared on the recording-instead of Ian Stewart on the piano it was Jack Nitzsche- who at the time was working with the great Phil Spector as a producer.
