The Beatles Song Of The Day- Birthday

The Beatles Song of the Day is Birthday. Birthday is the first song on the 3rd side of The White Album. It was written by Paul McCartney but John Lennon made some contributions. According to Lennon the song was made up on the spot in the studio. Some say it was written for Patti Harrison while they were all in India and she was celebrating her birthday.   Another source says that The Beatles arranged the recording session that day around the first British transmission of the great 50’s rock and roll movie- The Girl Can’t Help It which featured their hero Little Richard. They were to meet at Paul’s house near Abbey Road to watch it and Paul wrote it before the others arrived to watch the movie.  Linda Eastman’s birthday was six days after the recording was made and Paul knew she would be arriving in London the next week. In the 1980 Playboy interview John Lennon called it ‘ a piece of garbage.” Again a type of song Paul has a great talent for knocking off quickly. When I hear this song I think of baseball- at the Pirate games years ago they would be between innings once during the game show fans birthdays on the scoreboard- to “Birthday’- which was alright by me- two of my great loves together – The Beatles and baseball. Paul McCartney: vocal, piano: John Lennon: vocal, backing vocal, lead guitar: George Harrison: bass: Ringo Starr: drums, tambourine: Patti Harrison and Yoko Ono: backing vocals: All- plus Mal Evans: handclaps: Produced by George Martin.

  • rating *** stars out of 5 stars.

  • Spignesi and Lewis rank Birthday at #99 in their Beatles 100, critic Bill Wyman #135 out of 213 Beatles songs, the listeners poll at The Beatles Channel has it #79 in their 100- neither Rolling Stone Mag or Jim Beviglia rank it in their top 100. I wouldn’t either.
You say it’s your birthday
It’s my birthday too, yeah
They say it’s your birthday
We’re gonna have a good time
I’m glad it’s your birthday
Happy birthday to you
Yes we’re going to a party party
Yes we’re going to a party party

Take a cha-cha-cha-chance, birthday
I would like you to dance, birthday
