On this day August 16, 1976 The King of Rock ‘N Roll- Elvis Presley died at the age of 42 in his home in Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee.

I was not an Elvis fan at the time. Certainly I knew who he was and I could name a few of his songs. I was just about to the point in my life where I became a music fan but Elvis- sure everyone knew Elvis. I was at my uncle and aunt’s house, as I recall we were all outside and the Pirate game was on the radio. They broke into the game-with a bulletin from Memphis, Tennessee- Elvis Presley had died at the age of 42. My first thought was- he was old, old people die, he had lived a full life. 1. I remember watching Gilligan’s Island and the news broke through. Groucho Marx died three days later and no one really knew because the Elvis news was blanketing the headlines…understandably so…I knew who he was like you and could name some songs…it affected the grownups around me more…

    • My parents had a friend who was a huge Elvis fan- when Elvis died he was crying for days. I didn’t understand it…then a few years later John Lennon and I understood. .. I forgot Groucho died 3 days later… like when JFK was assassinated and CS Lewis and Aldous Huxley died the same day- bad timing.

    • It was probably weeks later that people heard Huxley and Lewis had died. ,, the fact that POTUS 2- ADAMS- 3 Jefferson died on the same day- a July 4th is still something that makes me shake my head- and then 5- Monroe dies on the 4th also about six years later– and Madison dies in late June- not making it to the fourth but for a week…

    • A couple of weeks ago I read about Adams and Jefferson…on July 4th of all days! Then Monroe… You couldn’t make that up for people to believe it…it’s like a B movie scripte.

    • Adams last words- “Jefferson lives”- of course he hadn’t gotten the text about Jefferson dying a few hours earlier.

    • I think it will be hard to top the 1-2 punch of Jefferson- Adams on the same day- 50 years after the Declaration of Independence. What would it have been like if they had the media coverage then that we have today?
