AUGUST 16, 1962- THE BEATLES SACK DRUMMER PETE BEST

In a move that had to be made- The Beatles sacked their drummer Pete Best on this day in 1962. Actually their manager Brian Epstein is the one who told Best he was done. From all accounts I have read- Best wasn’t better than adequate as a drummer and he didn’t fit in with John, Paul and George as far as personality goes. Best was there when there was a performance but otherwise would go his own way-whereas the other three were tight. I do think John, Paul and George should have been the ones to have told him-instead they passed it on to their manager to do the dirty work. Epstein asked Best if he would do the gig they had scheduled for that evening- of course he did what anyone in their right mind would have done- declined to do it. That night Johnny Hutchinson of The Big Three filled in as drummer at the Riverpark Ballroom in Chester, Cheshire. Richy Starkey would become the new drummer, performing with the band two nights later. The rest is history.

  1. While I completely agree the circumstances of Best’s departure weren’t classic, I simply can’t imagine The Beatles without Ringo Starr. I also wonder whether they would have lasted as long as they did without him. Ringo strikes me as a true band guy, not the ego type.

    • Most circumstances of this type I guess aren’t clean- I can’t imagine The Beatles making it without this change. Best may be a great fella but he wasn’t fitting in and he wasn’t a very good drummer. Every band needs a Ringo- no ego and he knew his strength’s and limitations. Without Ringo we would have never heard of The Beatles.
