The Beatles song of the day is “Happiness Is A Warm Gun.” It is the final song on side 1 of The Beatles White Album. The song was written by John Lennon. John said he got the idea for the song from the cover of a magazine that Beatles producer George Martin showed to him. There are three sections to the song- John said it was a miniature history of rock and roll with three different types of music and the three sections were the dirty old man, the junkie and the gunman. The song has also been interpreted as John’s sexual desire for Yoko Ono. The song was controversial- the BBC banned it.

Happiness Is A Warm Gun are three fragments of songs that weren’t working melded together to make a song. The first fragment came from a night of dropping acid at a house Beatles publicist Derek Taylor was renting, the second section the “I need a fix” part dealt with John’s relationship with Yoko- Mother Superior was one of John’s nicknames for her. The third section was the section inspired by the American gun magazine article. The final sections music and vocals were also inspired by an obscure old 45 by Rosie and The Originals that John loved called “Angel Baby.” The phrase Happiness Is A Warm Gun was a play on Charles Schutz’s book Happiness Is A Warm Puppy.  The song was written during The Beatles trip to India with the Maharishi.  John considered Happiness Is A Warm Gun one of his best songs. The darkest song on The White Album but also ranks as one of the best.

John Lennon: double-tracked vocal, backing vocal, lead guitar. Paul McCartney: backing vocal and bass. George Harrison: backing vocal, lead guitar. Ringo Starr: drums and tambourine. Produced by George Martin.

She’s not a girl who misses much
Do do do do do do, oh yeah
She’s well acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand like a lizard on a window pane.
The man in the crowd with the multi-colored mirrors on his hobnail boots.
Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy working overtime.
A soap impression of his wife which he ate and donated to the National Trust.
I need a fix ’cause I’m going down
Down to the bits that I left uptown
I need a fix ’cause I’m going down
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Happiness is a warm gun (bang bang shoot shoot)
Happiness is a warm gun, mama (bang bang shoot shoot)
When I hold you in my arms (oh, yeah)
And I feel my finger on your trigger (oh, yeah)
I know nobody can do me no harm (oh, yeah)
Because, (happiness) is a warm gun, mama (bang bang shoot shoot)
Happiness is a warm gun, yes it is (bang bang shoot shoot)
Happiness is a warm, yes it is, gun
Happiness (bang bang shoot shoot)
Well don’t you know that happiness (happiness) is a warm gun, (is a warm gun, yeah

  1. The way they jump into the “Happiness is a Warm Gun” part is brilliant. He built that song to climax at that part and when it comes in it doesn’t disappoint. A great Beatle song.
