ALBUMS

A painting of a stone lion standing on two legs in the sand

  • THE ROLLING STONES: BRIDGES TO BABYLON: 1997: 3 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: This isn’t a stunningly great Stones record- but its not a bad one either. It has no Stones classics on it but on the other hand nothing sounds awful or a throwaway either. A solid effort. Favorites- How Can I Stop,  Anybody Seen My Baby, Already Over Me, Flip The Switch,You Don’t Have To Mean It, Gunface, Might As Well Get Juiced. Again it is not an album that I ever had in heavy rotation-even when it was new but it’s not a bad listen.

  • PAUL SIMON: SONGS FROM THE CAPEMAN SOUNDTRACK: 1997: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The Broadway play The Capeman would turn out to be the Waterloo of Paul Simon’s career. It bombed and he lost millions and his confidence for a while but to be honest the music was pretty good. I didn’t see the play but I guess few did. Simon as always is changing his sound- going back to a sound he grew up on- doo wop, early rock n roll and Puerto Rican rhythms. It is starting to hear Simon swearing for the first time ever in one of his songs.

  • RICHIE HAVENS: RESUME: THE BEST OF RICHIE HAVENS: 1993: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: A nice listen- 17 songs- he will always be remembered for opening Woodstock and his great performance there. Freedom Freedom… A friend of mine who has done a lot of local concerts told me that the nicest person he had ever dealt with in all the years he did them was Richie Havens when he had him in for a concert. Like his version of Here Comes The Sun.

Also listened to the replay of American Top 40 on the 70’s on 7 station from the week of May 14, 1975 and the final hour of this weeks Neon Beat on Radio George.

  1. I saw them on the Bridges to Babylon tour…great concert and they played Far Away Eyes which shocked me… I like Flip the Switch off of the album.

  2. I like parts of Capeman, like Born in Puerto Rico and Trailways Bus, but as a whole it’s pretty weak for my ears. Vying with Wednesday Morning 3am as my least favourite thing he’s ever done.
