On this day in 1967 The Beatles performed a new song called “All You Need Is Love” on an around the world telecast called “Our World.” This was a big deal in the summer of 1967. This “Our World” program was the first live live global television link via satellite. This show was watched by 400 million people in 25 countries.

For the show creative artists from nineteen countries were invited to perform representing their countries in this 2 1/2 hour show- The Beatles were chosen to represent the United Kingdom. The Beatles were asked to do a song with a message that everyone in the world could understand. In the end it came down to “All You Need Is Love” or Paul’s ‘Your Mother Should Know”- well it had to be an easy choice. “All You Need Is Love” was chosen and the “Our World” program is remembered today mainly because of The Beatles performance of that song.

The Beatles invited some of their friends to join them in Abbey Road Studios to sing on the song- The Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were there, Eric Clapton,  Graham Nash, Keith Moon, Marianne Faithful, Patti Boyd [George Harrison’s wife} actress and then Paul McCartney girlfriend Jane Asher and Paul’s brother Mike.

The song would be released as a single and would go to #1. The Beatles had a pretty productive month with the release of the “Sgt. Pepper” album- and the telecast of a new song “All You Need Is Love {which would later be available on album later in the year on the Magical Mystery Tour.”}

below is a link to a video on the Our World telecast.
