JOHN BROWN’S FORT- HARPERS FERRY, WEST VIRGINIA

IMG_1130

In October 1959 John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia [now West Virginia.} His plan wasn’t very thought out. His goal was to take control of the armory. He believed that somehow local slaves would show up, he would arm them and they would go to war against the south freeing all the slaves as they headed south. He must have forgotten to send out his text or twitter message because no one got the message and Brown and his followers were surrounded and eventually Brown was captured in what is now known as John Brown’s Fort. If you’ve ever been to Harpers Ferry you would immediately agree that due to the physical geography of the place- there was no way Brown was going to be able to escape the place. Maybe Brown knew it all along- and though he didn’t live to see it, his actions helped to lead to his goal- a Civil War that would eventually free the slaves.
