PAUL MCCARTNEY ANNOUNCES HE’S LEAVING THE BEATLES- THIS DAY 1970

On this day in 1970 The Beatles officially broke up as Paul McCartney announced via press release that he was leaving The Beatles. His first solo album the very uneven “McCartney” would be released on April 17th in the UK and April 20th in the US. The Beatles all knew it was over before the announcement and they were all ready for it. This announcement shocked the world but I have always thought it was a brilliant move, breaking up when they did, still on top. John Lennon would later comment that he was the one who started the group and he would blow it up before things turned sour. I also was always against a ‘reunion.” Anything that they would have done would pale in comparison to what they accomplished. They had a flawless run. Ending it- and keeping it that way was genius. {Look at The Rolling Stones who are still together, longevity has its place but when was the last great Stones album? I’d say 1978 with “Some Girls.”  I would have hated to have seen The Beatles putting out marginal product.

  1. In my opinion, there were too many silly love songs during the post McCartney era. I would have preferred they had stayed together and kept their “musical edge.”
