” THE MERCURY SEVEN” ANNOUNCED THIS DAY IN 1959

On this day in 1959 NASA announced the original group of seven astronauts who were instantly dubbed by the media as “The Mercury Seven.” In the above picture they are-in back left to right- Alan Shepard,  Gus Grissom and Gordon Cooper. In the front row- Wally Schirra, Deke Slayton, John Glenn and Scott Carpenter. Shepard would be the first American who went into space and the only one of the original seven to walk on the moon. They are all gone now with John Glenn passing away last December. These guys were like rock stars to many.
