On this date in 1965 the Astrodome- the “8th Wonder of the World” opened to great fanfare in Houston, Texas.  At the time the Astrodome was viewed as a real marvel. The reason for building the Astrodome was in 1962 Houston got a baseball team, the Colt 45’s [later changed to Astros.} The owners promised a domed stadium to deal with the subtropical climate and hot summers of the region. The first game at the Astrodome was an exhibition game against the Yankees which drew a sellout crowd and President Lyndon Johnson and the First Lady Lady Bird Johnson. Mickey Mantle would hit the first home run.

    • I went to a game at the Astrodome. It was the first indoor stadium I’d been to. Like watching baseball in a movie theater. It was 95 and humid that day- I didn’t mind being indoors.

  1. lol “eighth wonder of the world”! The one thing I love about American marketeers is they never under-sell stuff. As a Brit who lives in the U.S. it’s one of the most noticeable differences.

    • Its funny 50 years ago it was the 8th wonder of the world- today it’s a dump that they don’t know what to do with.
