On this day in 1983 the television show M*A*S*H finished a run of 11 seasons and 256 episodes with its final episode. That final episode would set a record that still stands today and is unlikely to be broken- nearly 106 million people total viewers. No other season finale has approached that. It was also the record for most viewed television show ever up until the Super Bowl in 2010. The episode was called “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen.”
When I think of that episode the first thing that comes to mind is I was in college and had a night class that night. We talked to professor into letting us out early so we could all go back and watch it. Of course there were the days when you either watched it when it was on or waited forever to see it in a re-run.
Looking back at the yearly ratings of M*A*S*H, it is amazing that it made it out of its first year. The show was ranked #46 that first year, in the second year it jumped to #4. It’s highest yearly ranking was #3 in its final year. It was a very popular show and it seems like since its original run has always been out there to see in re-runs.
