In a discussion of who is the greatest all around race car driver of all time-the name Mario Andretti would have to be high on the list. Andretti was born this day in 1940-along with a twin Aldo in Italy. The Andretti’s immigrated to America in 1955.
Mario Andretti has won races in Formula One, IndyCar, NASCAR, World Sportscar Championship, midget cars and sprint cars. He is the only driver to ever win the Indy 5oo, Daytona 500 and the Formula One Championship. He is the only driver to win the United States Driver of the Year in three different decades. Overall he won 109 races.
Mario Andretti and the Andretti family are also known for their bad luck at the most famous race in America- the Indy 500. After winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1969 Mario had nothing but bad luck. He retired in 1994 without winning a second race at Indy. His son, grandson and nephew have also never won the race. Strange things seem to happen to the Andretti’s at Indianapolis. Thankfully the worst thing to happen to them there has been just losing races.
