Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” Is Released- 30 years Ago Today

On this day in 1982- 30 years ago today Michael Jackson released his “Thriller” album. “Thriller” is the biggest selling album of all times. It has sold somewhere between 65 and 110 million copies worldwide.

Seven of the albums nine songs were released as singles. The first single a duet with Paul McCartney reached #2 on the charts, it was probably the weakest song on the album. “Billie Jean” [Jackson’s greatest moment in my opinion} and “Beat It” both hit #1, “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” #5, “Human Nature” peaked at #7, “P.Y.T [Pretty Young Thing} #10 and the last single “Thriller” #4.  This was a great album. Of course after hearing all these songs for a couple of years you got tired of it {Although I’ve never gotten tired of hearing “Billie Jean”} A couple years ago after not listening to this for a long time, I gave it another listen. A masterpiece. Michael Jackson at his peak. I really don’t care for much of his work after this.

Michael Jackson of course was a star at an early age with the Jackson 5ive. “Thriller” was his 6th solo album and it was the album that propelled him from a hit maker to an icon. It was also I think the beginning of the end. Things started to spiral out of control for him after this. The freak show began. Very sad.
