On this date in 1882 – Charles J. Guiteau is hanged in Washington, D.C. for the assassination of U.S. President James Garfield. Garfield was assassinated at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Passenger Terminal. Garfield was shot July 2, 1881 but didn’t die until September 6th. Most experts believe if he had been given better medical care he would have survived. Today he would have survived. Back …then most doctor’s didn’t believe in anti-sepsis measures or the need for cleanliness to keep out infection. They were doing things like sticking their fingers into the wound to find the bullet…. a book came out last year about the assassination that I have been meaning to read. Its gotten great reviews..The name of the book is “Destiny of the Republic” by Candice Millard. The assassination site was torn down in 1908.
