Hans Hot 100 Beatles Songs: #30: ‘Taxman’
#30:’ Taxman’- Written by George Harrison- the lead off track on The Beatles greatest album- Revolver. Every song on Revolver made the Hot 100- except another George song from the album- ‘Love You To.’ George always seemed to be the Beatle most concerned about money and where it was going- this is his take on the tax system in England that was taking 90% of their earnings at the time. The best George song -up to this point.

I had never heard that before- I like it! Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome 🙂
Yes, the tax system there was rapacious at the time. It pauperised Walt Disney’s 60s wonderkid, Hayley Mills too. Her 21st birthday present was a fortune gone to the taxman, only small change left. I always loved Georges jaundiced observation- ‘my advice for those who die, declare the pennies on your eyes.’ I’m no fan of capitalism, but there must be a fine line between creaming those that rise to the top and killing the cash cow.
Makes one wonder how much the boys made. All that to the queen and they were still wealthy. I read somewhere where Paul played that raunchy lick at the beginning on an Epiphone Casino. May or may not be factual.
Such a great opening line.
