#35: ‘Please Please Me’- Written by John Lennon- credited of course to the songwriting team of Lennon-McCartney- ‘Please Please Me’ was The Beatles second hit- following ‘Love Me Do’- and their first Top 10 hit- reaching #2 in the UK singles chart in early 1963. Released a year later in the US- it would go to #3 during the heights of Beatlemania. Producer George Martin thought the original Please Please Me was pretty dreary and pushed ‘How Do You Do It? a Mitch Murray song as The Beatles single–The Beatles were against this idea and George Martin gave in- after Please Please Me- which was first written by John as a slow bluesy type song- was sped up a bit- it was and George Martin approved of its release. John Lennon would say he wrote ‘Please Please Me’ as a Roy Orbison type song.

    • I agree with you- would I rank it as one of the great songs of all time-or even of that era-no- but it’s a pleasant little tune.
