The final #1 hit of 1989- and the last of the decade- and it also carried over into 1990- so it was the first #1 of 1990 and of the 1990’s. A song about homelessness- Phil Collins took some what I would consider unfair heat over this song- what would he know about homelessness the ones who were critical would say- well what would John Lennon know about being a working class hero or Mick Jagger know about being a street fighting man? etc etc. Does a person have to live the experience to write a song about it? to write a book about it? No.
True about not having to literally live in someone else’s place. Music can focus an audience on issues in a far more meaningful way than some boring politician/teacher/preacher- eg, George’ s concert for Bangladesh, various Aids etc.
