#50- ‘Back In The USSR’=- One of 13 songs in the countdown from The White Album- there were no singles released from The White Album- but I think this one would have been a cinch to go to the top of the charts had they wished to release it. Paul McCartney wrote it- a parody of Chuck Berry’s “Back In The USA” and The Beach Boys ‘California Girls.’ The song was recorded without Ringo who had temporarily left the group. John and Paul were on drums.

  1. This is plain simple rock-n-roll exuberance at play- you can see the nod and a wink to Brian W, but mainly to Chuck. But it’s done in an appreciative, not mocking way. (I remember Lennon say something about Chucks “Nadine” being one of those songs that he ‘got.”) This song really soars, even with the sound effects.
