Hans Hot 100 Beatles Songs: #62 : ‘The Long And Winding Road’- The Beatles 20th and final #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Paul McCartney’s ‘The Long And Winding Road’- from Let It Be- one of 5 songs from that album to crack the Hans Hot 100. A song that would be rated higher I’m sure by many others- I’ve always felt that it falls a little short of its reputation. Maybe its the recording- Paul wasn’t pleased at all over Phil Spector’s orchestral and choral overdubs on Let It Be– decades later on Let It Be..Naked -Paul removed the overdubs- but to me it still falls short of masterpiece status.

Being a fan of grandiose orchestral music, I’ve always loved this song. It definitely ranks among my top 20 favorite Beatles songs.
This has always been a favorite song from “Let It Be,” but I agree with Paul here. The first time I heard the “ex-Spector-ated” version of this, I was in the car, and I swear, I had to pull off the road about halfway thru and try to pull myself back together. It was just that beautiful, without the orchestra and horns.
62 sounds about right to me.
I loved the song from the beginning but there was always a niggling sense that perhaps Paul tried too hard to get it right.
