#63: ‘Hey Bulldog’- This John Lennon song- was one of the four new Beatles songs that made it onto the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. For years it was a rather obscure Beatles song but decades later when The Beatles catalog became very well played out on the radio- it was sort of rediscovered- I don’t know how many times I’ve heard it referred as The Beatles underrated classic. Back in the 1970’s the Oakland A’s had a left fielder named Joe Rudi. He was a fine all around player but on a team with stars on it like Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue etc- Rudi kind of got lost in the shuffle as far as publicity goes. It came to be that nearly every time the A’s were on national television- during the season or post -season the announcers got to repeating over and over- Joe Rudi- one of the most underrated players in baseball. He became acclaimed for being underrated to the point where he may have become overrated- if that makes sense. ‘Hey Bulldog’ is the Joe Rudi of Beatles songs- for the past 20 years it has been called by so many people ‘the most underrated Beatles song’ that it is in danger of becoming overrated. I think #63 is a good spot for it.
