Great Baseball Moments- Johnny Vander Meer Pitches Two No- Hitters In A Row.
If not for two games in June 1938 Johnny Vander Meer today would only be known by baseball fans who were really into the history of the game. Vander Meer led the league in strike outs three times and was an All- Star four times. His career record was rather mediocre- 119 wins and 121 losses with a 3.44 ERA. But he is remembered- for those two games- June 11, 1938 as a Cincinnati Red he pitched a no-hitter against the Boston Braves. There are pitchers who have pitched no-hitters who are rather obscure– but what put Vander Meer into baseball history is his next start- against the Brooklyn Dodgers on June 15th- he pitched another no-hitter. Back to back no-hitters- no other pitcher- not even Nolan Ryan has accomplished that. Certainly a record which will never be broken- since to break it you’d have to pitch three no hitters in a row.
He was a really good pitcher for around a 3 year stretch…and this was before that stretch. He must have caught lightning in a bottle.
