Madonna’s fourth #1 hit- a controversial song- women’s organizations criticized Madonna for promoting teenage pregnancy- their main complaint is she threw them a curve ball- the song is about a young girl trying to tell her father about her pregnancy and that she is going to keep the baby. Would these groups have protested if she sang that she wasn’t going to keep the baby? Certainly not the first or last time Madonna was ‘controversial.’ She dedicated the song to Pope John Paul II- who had encouraged her Italian fans to boycott her tour. This was the third straight single from Warner Bros to hit #1 following Peter Gabriel’s ‘Sledgehammer’ and Peter Cetera’s ‘Glory Of Love.’
