Deep Cuts From 1971: ‘Playing With The Band’- The Grateful Dead. ‘Playing With The Band’ a song written by Grateful Dead lyrics Robert Hunter and Bob Weir- it appeared on the Grateful Dead album- a double live album released in the fall of 1971. The song would be released later on Bob Weir’s first solo album- Ace- in 1972 in a more polished form.
While after I had pretty much ignored the Grateful Dead for decades I finally started to explore them a bit a few years ago, I’ve never become a deadhead – even though I jokingly declared at the time I had transitioned from a bonehead to a deadhead.
Based on what I’ve heard, I’m mostly drawn to their early period, in particular the “Workingman’s Dead” and “American Beauty” albums from 1970. I’m generally less of a fan of their 15-minute-plus live jams, though every now and then I can do “Fire on the Mountain.”
BTW, congratulations for finding a really short live tune by the Dead! π
I am with you on those 15 minute live jams.. I saw that Dead 4 times- and they varied from great to lousy.
The closest I ever came was a Dead tribute band. I thought they did an excellent job capturing their music. A jam here and there is okay, but not every song, please! π
yes they could cover a 2 minute song and go a half hour on it.. no thanks.

Just a really pretty song. I love the Dead.
