Deep Tracks From 1971: ‘[You Caught Me]Smilin’- Sly and The Family Stone. The third single from what is generally considered Sly And The Family Stone’s greatest album- There’s A Riot Goin’ On- the first single Family Affair went to #1- the second “Runnin’ Away” peaked at #23, ‘Smilin’ just failed to crack the Top 40- peaking at #42. ‘Smilin’ is a hymn to getting high- something Sly was doing way too much of- and his music and life would soon suffer from the drug addiction.
Doesn’t sound familiar. “you caught me smiling again” is code word for using drugs?
? don’t know- but he was heavily into dope at the time–he sounds lite up
This was kind of popular on FM in Chicago, as I recall.
Wonderful song. You’re really nailing these.
Thanks!
