My Music Listening Journal 2021: Day 55: Wednesday February 24, 2021.

  • GEORGE HARRISON: GEORGE HARRISON: 1979: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: CD: POP ROCK: A Sound Day had written a great review of this album a couple days ago- and with George’s birthday coming up I thought I’d get this out. There is a little controversy over the actual date of George’s birth in 1943. While it was always given as February 25th-just after midnight he found out late in life that it may have occurred on the 24th- before midnight. Anyway. This was the first ‘new’ George album since I caught a terminal case of Beatlemania so it has always been a special album to me. George really sounds happy on this album. He had recently married and became a father for the first time- and many of the songs were written in Hawaii. What not to be happy about? As time goes on George is becoming my favorite Beatle I do believe. Anyway- Mount Rushmore- ‘Blow Away’, ‘ Faster’, ‘Love Comes To Everyone” and ‘Not Guilty’- a song originally written back during The White Album days.
  • JOHNNY CASH: UNCHAINED: 1996: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: IPOD: COUNTRY ROCK: I just love that entire series of albums Johnny Cash did with Rick Ruben and American Recordings in the last decade of his life. What a great comeback- these are my go-to Johnny Cash recordings. Cash covers- Beck, Soundgarden, Tom Petty and a host of others- an throws in a handful of originals on this his second album at American. The first album was better but this one holds up well. Mount Rushmore: ‘Rowboat’, “Rusty Cage’, ‘Southern Accents” and ‘Unchained.”

  1. Not Guilty belonged on the White Album…so long Wild Honey Pie…This album tends to get lost in the shuffle. I bought it in the cutout bin not long after it was released. I’ve always liked it…best bargain on a Beatle solo album ever.

  2. thanks for the mention Hans! As it happened my sweetie and I had to borrow her sis’s car last night to do a few errands and it was on a Beatles satellite station… it was quite cool, they were talking about George all the time we were out , they interviewed Mike Campbell who knew Ringo well and apparently played at the memorial show for George… was almost like we wanted to keep driving just to hear more!

  3. I don’t have that George album! I also didn’t know when Geo’s birthday was. I have “I Me Mine” waiting for me at the library. I need my Geo fix. So you’re being swayed by his charms, Hans? I don’t have the Unchained Cash either! Need to go a-searching for it also with those musicians who pitched in on it.

    • I like all the Cash- Rick Ruben albums- I think it is the greatest comeback in popular music history– artistically. The man was down and out for nearly 20 years- and basically came back with just a guitar and his voice.
