Under The Covers- Other Artists Covering Beatles Songs: ‘From Me To You’- was a #1 hit in the UK in 1963. Later released in the US as a single -strangely it peaked at #41. In the spring of 1962 Del Shannon was on a bill with 15 other artists- including The Beatles at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Shannon back stage told John Lennon he was going to cover ‘From Me To You’- at first Lennon was flattered but then had second thoughts- that it might hurt The Beatles chances of breaking through in the US. As it turned out neither Del Shannon’s version or The Beatles original hit the Top 40 in the US- Shannon’s released in 1963 before Beatlemania hit the US- peaked at #77. “At that time no one had heard of the Beatles here (the US), but I knew they were great writers so I just picked up on one of their songs,” Shannon would later say.
