My Music Listening Journal: Day 41: Wednesday February 10, 2021.

- DAVID BOWIE: NEVER LET ME DOWN: 1987: 1 STAR OUT OF 5 STARS: ITUNES: ROCK: David Bowie’s 17th album- was his career low. I thought Tonight from 1984 was bad- this is much worse. Bowie would quickly disown it himself. The production is so 1980’s- it sounds horrible and the songs sound half baked. It’s hard to believe this is the same cutting edge artist from the 1970’s- but I guess everyone if they have long enough of a career has their down period.

- JOHNNY CASH: AMERICAN RECORDINGS: 1994: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: IPOD: FOLK, COUNTRY: And speaking of artists who had their down periods- and then bounced back in a big way. Johnny Cash had been in both a commercial and critical down spin for nearly two decades. His place in music history was assured even if he had been finished as an artist- but he did make a miraculous comeback after signing with Rick Ruben- this was the first album of the comeback. While commercial country radio ignored it- the album was a critical success- and there would be more to come even after his passing in 2003. This was nothing fancy just Johnny and his guitar and some great songs.
Right there with you on “Never Let Me Down.” I tried *so* hard to like it … and I just didn’t.
Same here- It wasn’t like I gave it one listen- I tried and tried…and well- I guess everyone is due a let down period now and then.
Yikes…I must have completely slept through that Bowie album. After the big one I lost touch for a while…looks like that was a good thing.
Yes you were better off sleeping though Tonight and Never Let Me Down.
I picked him back up with Tin Machine. I was thinking…yea here he is again evolving back to basics.
I liked the Tin Machine albums – a comeback- I think his 90’s early 2000s work is under valued.
I wont bother with that Bowie album. I don’t think it ever showed up on a library search either, so someone must have known how bad it was. I love that Johnny Cash one. The Tennessee Stud is my favorite on that one, but Delia’s Gone is a close second.
Johnny Cash- the first gangsta rapper!
The Cash is a must
