  • DAVID BOWIE: LODGER: 1979: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: ITUNES: EXPERIMENTAL ROCK: Bowie closes out the 70’s with his 13th album. Lodger is considered the third album in the Berlin Trilogy- although it was recorded in Switzerland. Brian Eno has a hand in writing six of the ten songs here- and also plays on the album. This album is another Bowie album which took me a number of spins to really like but eventually it clicked: Mount Rushmore: “DJ”, “Boys Keep Swinging”, ‘Fantastic Voyage” and “Yassassin.”

  • PHIL SPECTOR: BACK TO MONO: 1991: DISC 2 AND 3: IPOD: POP: Phil Spector created some of the greatest music of the early 60’s- his peak years are featured on these two discs- 1963-65. “Be My Baby” and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'” two of the greatest singles ever.

  • BASEBALL’S GREATEST HITS: 1989: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: IPOD: February made me shiver.. it is cold and going to get even colder next week- so it was time to listen to some baseball songs to bring on thoughts of spring- which Phil says is six weeks away. I made a Top 40 Baseball songs a couple years ago- some of the songs on this collection made it.

  1. Aces. I still find this quite a tricky album for some reason. Maybe because it veered off again in a new direction – “oh, come on, Reeves, that’s what Bowie does best. Do keep up!”

…However, Boys Keep Swinging – the song, the providence, the video – is actually one of my favourite tracks of his. I thrill with every listen at the clatter, the clutter, the cut and paste of it all. I love the ‘analogue’ of it – the wonderful (almost clunky) edits of Belew’s spur of the moment solo and the bash-bash-bash of the drums – I adore the story behind it, too; the swapping of instruments, etc, go a long way to making the palpable excitement captured here.

    Heaven loves ya! xo

  2. Looks like you’ve been on a Bowie trip lately. 🙂

While I really dig Bowie’s early work, especially the glam rock period, I never quite warmed to the Berlin trilogy. Though perhaps I should revisit these albums. Apparently, it was also a bit of an acquired taste for you.
