Amii Stewart was a one-hit wonder- and that one hit was a big one- going all the way to #1 in the spring of 1979. She had two other Hot 100 hits but neither of them threatened the Top 40. She was born in Washington, D.C in 1956 a disco singer- dancer and actress. “Knock On Wood’ was a disco remake of the Eddie Floyd single from 1966 which peaked at #28- but was a #1 R&B single. The original was of course far superior to the remake. In 1974 David Bowie remade the song and released it as a single in Europe- it make #10 in the UK Singles chart.
I was ridiculously fond of this version, probably due to one too many evenings at the roller rink, LOL.
Oh, I have to disagree. This song is AWESOME. She has an incredible voice range.
Disagree? I gave it a B– is a B- all that bad?
Oh. Not that part. You stated that the original was far superior. I disagree with that part. LOL! B- ain’t bad. LOL!
Though I was huge fan of disco (as I’ve mentioned too many times already), I was never very fond of this song. It was catchy, but dull, and like you, I’d give a B-minus.
I have to say while Amii Stewart’s voice is definitely strong, giving this great tune a disco spin, doesn’t work for me. I think Eddie Floyd’s original was far better. Looks like there are many artists who have covered this tune. Like Wilson Pickett. I will admit I really dig Pickett, so may be a bit biased here! 🙂
