“Heavy Makes You Happy” was the first Top 40 hit by The Staple Singers a family R&B group featuring Pop Staples and his daughter Mavis. The Staples Singers had 15 Hot 100 hits with 8 making the Top 40 from 1971-76- which included two #1’s 1972’s “I’ll Take You There” and 1975’s “Let’s Do It Again.” The Staples Singers first album came out in 1958- but 1971’s The Staple Swingers on Stax was their first chart album. The Staples Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
