This really seemed like an out of left field hit in 1978. Johnny Mathis had last hit #1 with “Changes Are” in 1957. His last Top 40 hit – had been when President Kennedy was in office in 1963. Deniece Williams had only one previous hit in her career- 1976 “Free” #25. Johnny Mathis is my mother’s favorite singer- and she got to see him in concert later that summer for the first time. To me Johnny Mathis was someone from a different era- his popularity was in the late 1950’s- but looking at it now- he was only 42 years old when this went to #1. He was hardly an old codger.
I like this song. “Changes Are” should be “Chances Are” which is a gorgeous song. I love Johnny’s voice also. Deniece’ voice goes well with Johnny’s voice.
