My Music Listening Journal 2019: Day 14: Thursday January 14, 2021

- AIMEE MANN: WHATEVER: 1993: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: CD: POP ROCK: I have been a fan of Aimee Mann’s since the first Til Tuesday album in the mid 80’s- this was her first solo album and I still think her best. Elvis Costello had it listened in his “Costello 500” list. There are more hooks in this album than there are in Babe Winkleman’s tackle box. Mount Rushmore: “I Should’ve Known”, 4th of July”, “Stupid Thing” and “Say Anything.”

- BILL WITHERS: STILL BILL: 1972: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: VINYL: SOUL: Bill Withers was in his mid 30’s by the time his debut came out in 1972- the debut was great and the follow up just as strong. It’s a shame he got fed up with the music business and retired early. What a great voice and he was a wonderful songwriter. He passed away last year it was good to see him late in life get recognition- the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mount Rushmore-‘Lean On Me’, ‘Use Me’, ‘Lonely Town, Lonely Street’ and ‘Kissing My Love.’

- THE ZOMBIES: ODESSEY AND ORACLE: 1968: 5+ STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: VINYL: POP: For years I thought The Zombies- and three songs- “She’s Not There”, “Tell Her No” and “Time Of The Season”- then about twenty years back I bought the box set Zombie’s Heaven- and realized I had been missing out. While the group wasn’t together all that long- they were great- [and they finally got Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recognition a couple years ago.} This is their most acclaimed and best album-Mount Rushmore: “Time Of The Season’,”Care Of Cell 44”, “A Rose For Emily” and “Beechwood Park.”
Nice choices 👏🏻
I really dig the Amiee Mann album.
saw her in concert during that era- opening for The KInks- that was a great evening.
Nice pairing that. I’ll bet that worked well
Recently had a chance to pick up The Zombies one but have only listened to it a few times so far.
I’d have gotten fed up with the music biz, too.
