The Beatles Top 60 Solo Songs: #20: “{Just Like} Starting Over”- John Lennon. “{Just Like} Starting Over” was rising up the charts-it was at #6 in the Billboard Hot 100 in the last Hot 100 before John Lennon was assassinated on December 8, 1980. A couple weeks later it was at #1- John’s second and final #1 hit as a solo artist. I am not a big fan of the ‘what if” game. Being a Beatles fan I don’t know how often I’ve heard the -Would they have gotten back together ? Would they have done concerts had John not been assassinated question. Who knows. One thing I will speculate on- I do think if John Lennon had lived that over the last 40 years he would have been active in the music business. I think he would have made interesting and important music. “[“Just Like} Starting Over”- the first single from Double Fantasy- due to the events of the time always brings about a sadness to me. In interviews right before his death John described “Starting Over” as his doing Elvis/ Orbison. The Double Fantasy album itself is hard to evaluate even forty years later because of what I associate it with.

  1. It’s a beautiful pop tune by John, even though you’re right it’s kind of bittersweet listening to it, knowing the song was on the final solo album released during his life time.

While half of the tracks are by Yoko, “Double Fantasy” is one of my favorite Lennon solo albums. Pretty much all of his tunes are great, and the Yoko songs were as good as it could get and actually not that terrible.

    • The song just brings back memories- that was a song they seemed to play all the time during the few months afterwards..I agree I think all of his songs on that album were top notch.
